Blog post #1

As of last semester, I have realized just how important it is to communicate information and ideas through writing in a professional manner. At first it was hard to grasp what concepts I needed in order to be a competent writer. But, as the weeks progressed, I soon found myself successfully communicating my viewpoints. Now that a new semester has rolled around, I am taking the chance to further sharpen my writing skills with this writing class. I know that in the future I will need to clearly present facts, issues, or ideas to my audience.

That being said, I can see why this class is mandatory for all IUPUI students. If I were a chemist and only knew how to formulate experiments, but didn’t know how to properly publish my findings, then how can others repeat my work? This would be absolute chaos for my colleagues. By having writing classes offered to all students, this scenario would not come to pass. But, in all honesty, I am glad that there is only one writing class that is required.

  1. I can relate to how you are viewing this class. I also believe that writing is important to all fields of study. I agree that it is important that we have a writing class required because it is good to be well rounded and have different skills not just the ones required for a science major.

  2. I agree. A writer who writes in a way that only he can understand is a useless writer. His audience will never get the point of his messages. I am glad they make us take a writing class too because it gives us a chance to enhance our writing skills in other courses as well. Overall, it makes us better college students. Like you said, writing is important, and it should be mandatory. That's all. Good post.

  3. I agree as well. I think that they make it mandatory so that every one has an equal chance at being able to express their ideas in a professional manner. It makes it some what of a level playing field for all of the students in a university to be able to have a solid foundation for writing. Great post!
