What I've Learned-Christine

This semester I've learned many things about writing.  With the image analysis essay I learned how to better describe images and this will help me to write other analysis papers even if they are not about images.  I also learned how to analyze which was challenging because I had not been asked to do this a lot previously.  The textbook helped me a lot with writing this paper which surprised me because I had thought that textbooks about writing were not very helpful.

The synthesis essay is where I learned the most and struggled the most.  I think because this was the most challenging paper it was also the most rewarding.  I wrote a synthesis essay in high school but it was not a struggle like this one was.  The topic I chose to write about was sex education and I think the two articles I chose were good because it was hard for me to see a correlation initially.  I considered changing one of my articles but I'm happy I didn't because I grew as a critical thinker from this paper.  The skill of critical thinking was something I started to develop in my high school AP English classes but I can see how much more I have grown during this semester.  With each paper I have written I have become more confident in my writing and I'm glad this paper was hard to write because I gained more than I did with any other.

  1. I agree with you. Half way through my synthesis essay I wanted to switch topics entirely because the paper was not coming to me like the ones I had written in the past. I am also glad that I made no changes in articles or topics because I too realized that I learned more from writting about a subject outside of my comfort zone than I would have writting about a subject I was familiar with. High School writting to College writting is a big step and I am glad to see that you are more confident in your writting now after this semester.

  2. I think that the text book was very helpful also. I also agree that taking this class for sure makes you have to step outside of your comfort zone in writting because some of the essays we wrote, were very different that the essays we wrote in high school.

  3. Christine I agree with you on the face that the Synthesis was a much harder paper to write than any other that we have been assigned. It will help you build more confidence and I know that it has helped me. However, I dont agree with what you said about the book helping you through the essay's. I just think that peer feedback is a much better route to take when trying to write a paper and the book just gives very general examples of writing. Nonetheless whatever helps you the most is all that matters!

  4. I agree with you about the book helping because I used it quite a bit as a reference and guide to help me through my essays. I also agree with the idea that the harder and more challenging the essay is, the more rewarding it is.

  5. I agree that the synthesis essay was the hardest. I book gave some goo examples and help me generate some new content. I almost changed my topic to because I couldn't come up with anything to write about. Once I sat down and really thought about my topic I was able to finish my paper.

  6. Synthesis paper was most definietly the hardest, i struggled with it because it was my first one, but once i realized that the book was answering all my questions, i ended up reading the chapter, and i feel that my synthesis is the strongest paper ive ever written.

  7. I totally agree that the synthesis essay was the hardest to write. I had a very hard time forming ideas to support my thesis, however, like you said, it was definitely the most rewarding. I learned so much and I was able to open my mind a lot.
