I have enjoyed writing the last two essays of the semester. They challenged me not only as a writer but as a thinker. Before writing the image analysis essay I thought that advertisements had no effect on me. After reading into the marketing strategies of Hollister and Abercrombie, the two companies advertisements I chose to analyze, I now have a better understanding of how marketers try to entice consumers on an emotional level to sell products. I also learned how to look at an advertisement and pick out all the elements of the advertisement from the color scheme to the setting and to know that everything in the picture is focused on getting a consumer to buy.
I have never written a synthesis essay before so I would say that was the harder of the two papers for me to write. This idea of looking at two articles and creating a new idea from them was very foreign to me. After I had trouble generating content for the topic I chose I wanted to switch topics completely. I am glad that did not end up happening because I feel that I grew more as a writer and a thinker from writing about a topic that was out of my comfort zone.
I agree with you about the image analysis paper. I too found out that companies will do anything to win you over and will put anything in their advertisements to do that. I also learned about how companies try to make the colors right and overall setting to grab the attention of the consumer.
ReplyDeleteThe image analysis opened my eyes as to what it is advertisers do to get us to buy their product. I never realized how much thought was behind it and how every little thing in an advertisment has a purpose.
ReplyDeleteI also struggled with my synthesis essay. I had problems grasping the concept of it. I actually ended up changing my paper completely as I came to understand what synthesis was all about. After reading several of these blog postings, it makes me feel better knowing I wasn't the only one to struggle with it!
I was the same way, i thought that ads had no effect on me. after i started reading about ads and thinking about them, i realized that they effect me everyday, starting with getting dressed in the morning.
