What I've Learned - Amy Williams

While writing the image analysis essay and the synthesis essay, I have learned quite a bit. First of all, I learned exactly what an image analysis and synthesis was and how to write them. That alone is going to help me through college as well as my career. Also, a piece of information I learned about myself is that I don't really "know it all." What I mean is that learning is never-ending and that I will always be able to learn something new. Throughout my image analysis, I was able to better my understanding of how and why advertisers create their advertisements. It was something I never really stopped to think about, but now that I see the major effects it has on us, I'm able to say no to a lot more things because it is not something I would really need, nor would it make me as happy as they perceive it would. Throughout my synthesis essay, I learned about the millennial generation and the parenting actions that caused them to be so different from the previous generations. By doing this essay, I also learned so much more about past generations due to extra research I did on it to get a better understanding of how the older generations were compared to the millennial generation. Overall, I have been able to learn several new things from each essay I have done and that writing a paper for myself, rather than for the teacher, really does cause me to create a better understanding of a new topic and discover new things about it.

  1. I've become a better consumer, too (through teaching IA essays and Deep Economy.) At least now I stop and think before I buy something--though I still over consume and make frivolous purchases. The media is a powerful influence. Even though I know a bigger TV won't really make me any happier in the long run, I'm still trying to convince my wife we need one. Maybe I'm addicted to that initial rush of setting up new electronic equipment? (Because if we get a bigger TV, I know I'll want better surround sound--we'd have to sit so far away!)

  2. I agree, when first reading the syllabus and knowing I had to write these essays was a blur. I enjoyed learning what the essays were, and how to write them aswell.I also have learned something new from every assignment we have accomplished.

  3. I love the way you put you don't know it all. At first I was like wow, she must be a snob, then I read on; you saying learning is never ending and that is a very true statement. Reminds me of the saying, "You learn something new everyday." Learning doesn't end. Sure, we learn some things over nd over, but each time, we pick something up that we didn't know before.

  4. I agree with Amber. I know the more I researched the more I realized that learning is never ending. I think this class was important because it showed us how to research and ask the question why.

  5. I agree that learning how to write an image analysis essay and a synthesis essay will benefit us through college and our careers. I feel that I have learned a lot from the research that I did on my synthesis essay. I believe we have become more capable students through writing these essays.

  6. Writing these two essays, I felt like the synthesis essay was more enjoyable as a paper, but that the image analysis was more beneficial to me. Though I have problems personally with writing for my own experience, I still find myself trying to write for the assignment, not for my personal gains.
