Looking back at Synthesis
Looking back at the synthesis essay, which is one of the most challenging I've had to write, I've learned more about how ingrained race is in American culture than anything else. We can try to remove race by removing labels, but instead of removing race all together we just focus on some other facet - such as clothing or music or where someone lives. Even writing about the topic of race is very difficult to do without ensnaring oneself in using racial terms. It's nearly impossible to say "we shouldn't use black and white" without saying "black and white". The bigger question to this issue is where we need to be for it to be "acceptable?" That's the million dollar question and I doubt it's something that will be answered within my lifetime. There will probably never been a "single" answer and each culture and each person in each culture will have to come up with this for themselves.

Why is it that our society has to place a label on everything. On the color of our skin to the clothes we were to the kind of musice we listen to and even the color of our hair? Why is our society so worried about labeling and judgeing people when they don't even know who a person really is?
ReplyDeleteI think race will always be an issue, atleast for a long time that is. It's hard not to use the terms "black and white" because by based on skin color that is what we are. We shouldn't judge others by looks or skin color.
ReplyDeleteI agree one hundred percent derek. Our articles were very similar but instead of saying we should not use race labels at all I talked about when we should and when we shouldnt use them. I also found it hard not to come off hypocritical when writting a paper about race. I guess there are just more universally accepted terms to use for races rather than the ones we let slip out of our mouths daily.
