End of semester

As the semester ends we all have to begin on our final portfolios. I feel like the final portfolio is more beneficial to us rather than an in class final. In class finals can be very stressful and can make students very uncomfortable. Personally I don't like being in test room and being forced to complete something in a short amount of time. This final portfolio gives us plenty of time and lets us complete our work to the best of our ability. We are able to work on our own in a non-stressful enviroment. Working in a non-stressful enviroment gives you the ability to focus more on the writing and not the distractions around you. I would like every class to have a take home final. I would do much better on each final if that was available. Although I know that will never happen due to cheating and other factors it would be really nice if it would. Do you feel like the final portfolio benefits you rather than an in class final?

  1. I certainly feel a portfolio gives a student more control over how well they do in the end. A test can surprise you, but a portfolio cannot. If the essays included were polished finely to begin with, then there is even less to worry about in comparison to exams.

  2. The portfolio is a good way of a student showing that when he is given as much time as they want, this is the result that comes of it. There are some good benefits to a class final was well.

    One is that it acts as a check to make sure that students with different teachers for one particular course are all learning the same compared to another student with a different teacher. It is a way of evaluating a teacher to make sure they are doing what is asked of them.

    Another benefit and the most important is that it weans out all the people who can't work under pressure or work with deadlines. For instance, I have a co-worker who takes three times as long at completing a task, but does the same quality of work as the rest of his peers.

    In relating this to a final, it ensures that everyone is given the same task and the same amount of time to complete it. The quality of the task is the grade received. Those who do poor or cannot complete the task do not receive a good grade. It works well at evaluating the student with everyone else.

  3. I think the protfolio is just another type of final. The grade emphasis is actually more drastic than in any of my classes with finals, and its the only truly effective way to measure progress in a writing course.
