Writing in the Future
During the last class of the semester, the theme was that writing stalks all of us like a starving vulture, and will continue to do so for the rest of our lives. The examples were cruel: essays in math about mathematicians, fourteen page papers in a basic western civilization course over a broad topic, and journals about patients for nurses. It is my opinion, however, that writing need not be such an ominous figure. Rather, I would have it as something to use in order to demonstrate your own effectiveness in life. If your boss demands someone to do a report, do it and make a name for yourself. Did you do poorly n that last exam? Then knock out the essay. If you view writing as something other than a task, it’s no longer a chore. Portraying a paper as something to dread until near the time it is due is incorrect, despite the common nature people have to do so. Embracing it, thinking about your approach, and reminding yourself on what you want to do long before the due date will lead to a more fluent paper written in less time, with less mind blocks too! Now, the odds of anyone taking my advice is pretty low; I do not even abide by it sometimes. However, try it out just once if need be. I assure you you will at the very, utter minimum, feel less nervous about writing the paper. Of course this also applies to anything involving paper and text, not just essays.
