Blog #2

When I first began reading Gen Me I was surprised at how judgmental it made me. I am at the far end of the gap and at first I found myself nodding my head and thinking “those darn kids”. It was later that I realized what I had let this book do to me. I don’t believe that ALL of Generation Me behaves that way. I have known some wonderful, selfless, truly intelligent people in the age grouping. I certainly didn’t want to be lumped In with what they were saying about them and I am sure that most of you were offended by the stereotypes too, but this book made you think. It makes you take a look at the world around you and the changes we may have missed because we are so busy.

I am not completely sure what I want to write about, but I am leaning towards the issues of self-esteem and unreached expectations. I wonder if gen me was set up to fail by a school system afraid to let them learn to fail and parents who bow to their every whim, creating these kids who are unable to truly succeed on their own.

I hope to find more in myself from this writing. I hope that I will be able to do well and really write something of consequence. I would like to see things from my reader’s point of view and write something that accurately portrays my thoughts and ideas.

  1. I agree, there are many people that I know too that do not fit into the generalizations. Contrary to that, when reading, there were certain people that came to mind when she was describing characteristics.
I think the self-esteem issue is a good topic to write about.

  2. Interesting comment about schools. A question you might explore is if this was partly driven by schools or if the local school district is reflecting expectations of the community.
