Eiteljorg Museum

I went to the Eiteljorg museum expecting to gain a better knowledge of Native Americans’ culture and history that I might have never known if it were not for our class trip there.  Initially I was not particularly excited about the museum, but when we got there it was more interesting than what I had anticipated.  A trip to an exhibit such as the Eiteljorg can be very beneficial to anyone, especially to a first year college student.  I believe this to be so because it is very informative and gives the museum-goer the chance to learn more about Native American history and culture.  I have been to the Natural History museum and the Children’s museum multiple times each but neither one compared to the Eiteljorg in the way that the information in the museum was presented.  The Eiteljorg is geared more towards the mature audience than the other museums that I have visited.  I did not intentionally approach the museum with an open mind, but I discovered that while I was there I did have an open mind the entire time because I never shut myself off from what I was learning.  If I could change one aspect about my trip to the Eiteljorg museum I would go as a visitor instead of as a student with a class.  I feel as if I would have gotten a great deal more out of going as a visitor because I would have been able to spend as much time as I would have liked at each part of the museum.  I would have been able to take more away from it and possibly have an even greater learning experience than I had through going as a student with a class.  Although I believe that I would have benefited from going to the museum by myself, as a visitor, more so than going as a student with a class, I think that it is valuable for first year college students to go to museums as a class because it gives them an opportunity to learn about something that they might not otherwise learn about.

  1. I agree with most of the points that Eric made throughout his post. I strongly agree with what he was saying about the amount of information the Eiteljorg Museum had over museums such as The Childrens Museum which is like Eric said, geared more towards younger audiences. I wish I could have kept an opened mind like Eric was able to. I think I would have gained mush more from the experience that way. I also think that a trip to a museum like this is very beneficial for first year college students because it makes them open up their eyes to things they may not have thought about prior to their visit.
